Paddlefish and sturgeon are close relatives, but paddlefish are NON-STURGEON CAVIAR
- Explanation: Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) are the only living species in the paddlefish family, Polyodontidae, which is a sister group to the sturgeon family, Acipenseridae. DNA evidence suggests that paddlefish and sturgeon shared a common ancestor around 140 million years ago, likely during the Jurassic period when their distinctive “paddle-nose” began to develop. Paddlefish are also known as spoonbill, spoonbill cat, shovelnose cat, and boneless cat because of their duckbill-like snout.
